Speculation of Macworld SF
by Brennan Stehling
January 3, 2002

The coming Macworld in San Fransisco is being hyped heavily, and this time Apple is pouring fuel onto the fire. The last major announcement about the new iPod did not change the world as some had felt, but it may have been a sneak peek of what is to come. There is plenty of speculation on various sites, but hints on the Apple website have claimed the big announcement is way beyond the rumors which have been circulating. So I think it would be fun to stretch the imagination of what exciting things Apple could be cooking up for Monday morning on the West Coast.

When I think big, I also think practical. It is no good if the next big thing is not of much use. When you think of major hype for something hardly anyone will find useful think of Segway. My expectations for a big announcement which goes beyond recent rumors would include these three wild guesses. Just keep in mind, Apple killed their PDA back in 1998, never ported MacOS to the Intel platform and has yet to make a real effort to make progress in the server market.

Roaming Desktop with iPad

Not only is this new Apple PDA an excellent handheld with a color screen, handwriting recognition, 5 gigabytes of storage, and a firewire port, it also allows you to sync up your MacOS X desktop, including all of your documents and applications, and take them on the go. You can take your iPad anywhere. Go to work and have your desktop. Go to a friends house and have your desktop. Go from class to class or meeting to meeting and have your desktop. You will always have your checkbook, addressbook, mp3 archive and pictures of your trip to Vegas along with all of your favorite applications.

MacOS X comes to Intel, and it is Free!

In a move sure to shake things up, Apple will be expanding it's platform base from the PowerPC hardware to the Intel architecture(x86). What was once a forbidden platform, MacOS X will now happily call it a home away from home. For months the Darwin base to the new OS has been running nicely on the Intel platform; Apple now has given it the final push. Fire up that PC and discover the power of MacOS X for free. Just pick up a copy at your nearest Apple retail store. To enhance your MacOS X experience, subscribe to web services provided by Apple.com, Mac.com, CNN.com and ESPN.com.

How does this all sound to you? I just hope what Apple announces will match the potential of each of these wild guesses.
